Review #1 / Course: BIOL 3040 / Instructor: CARSTENS B
Carstens obviously cares about the material, but his is pretty monotone (not a good thing for 8:30 in the morning). I felt that his grading was pretty subjective and sometimes awkward. For instance, he asked several essay questions on the midterm, but graded them based on whether or not they contained an arbitrary set of facts he had decided were most important - rather than overall content and message delivery. I definitely enjoyed this class, but be prepared for some intense writing. All sources have to be peer-reviewed papers (which take about 30 minutes to skim), and a few of my papers had 30+ paper citations in them (he checked each citation for content). Our final was two separate essays and took up a lot of time to write effectively. He expects "A" papers to be written on the level of a scientific review paper. I learned a lot. Not just about evolution, but about scientific writing and how to communicate complicated concepts in understandable language.
