WATKINS S (CHEM)

Honors Chemistry sound more impressive than regular Chemistry, but not worth it in this case. Pre-Med, Pre-Pharm, or not, I recommend staying away for the sake of your GPA. Apparently, he's retiring after this year, though, so you might be much better off next Fall! I have a friend that made an A, so it's not impossible- I just feel that most students would be better off learning AND having the grade to show for it, rather than just learning.

Watkins' exams are somewhat tricky. If you take him, be prepared to study outside the box. I've also heard he doesn't help you much if you meet him outside of class. However, he does give generous curves on exams (because everybody just flunks them), and a decent amount of extra credit on homework assignments.

Simply put, this class takes A LOT of time. The exams are extreemly hard. They are about 10 free response questions in 50 minutes. He even made one just to fail people. The curve was so steep that if you had something in the middle 30's you had a C. You do learn a lot, but be prepared to learn from the book. The classes aren't un-helpful, but he basically reads from the slides which he posts on the internet. Time is probalby netter spent reading the book and working problems from there. The SI sessions are very important to go to. Watkins isn't a mean guy though and is apparently very helpful if you go to his office hours. But you have to go to him with specific questions. I didn't really go, but that's what I heard from other people. Essentially though, you're taking a much harder class with almost no real reward unless you really find chemistry fascinating. I'm sure my second semester of non-honors chem will be a breeze though. If you really like chemistry, I mean really like it, you may want to take this course. Otherwise, I wouldn't advise it.

Watkins is an okay teacher. I would take him again if I had to retake the class. Teaches by powerpoints, my friends and I ended up not having to go to class at all. We would just study the powerpoints he posted on moodle and do the practice tests.

HORRIBLE!!! STAY AWAY!!! He is the creepiest man on campus, do not take him, anyone is better than him. I got an A by teaching myself everything in the book and just knowing stuff from high school ... he was horrible!!!! The only good thing about him is that he curves, but i think that is pretty much departmental so, yeah take someone else

they offer you a packet to buy at the beginning of the semester for $10. buy it and don't show up to class. watkins will ONLY read what's on the slides. he doesnt' really teach. he'll do 1 example and never show you again. go to class the day before the exams, that's review day for the test. very helpful. if you take this class, you better expect to teach yourself. i had to teach myself and pass with a B

This guy doesn't teach you anything you need to know for the test. Be prepared to teach yourself, don't bother going to class because all he does is read off the slides which won't help you at all. Horrible teacher, not a bad class.

He is the worst! His exams are really hard. The class average for his exams are always below 50. I suggest Hopkins, Hogan or Cook

Watkins is a cool guy and really wants his students to do well in his class, and is EXTREMELY helpful if you visit during office hours. He also posts his lecture notes online, which follow his lectures verbatim.

Watkins may make you work hard for a grade; however, you WILL learn the material in this man's class, he is a very good instructor. I was very well prepared for the group final.

Watkins is horrible excuse for a teacher. He does not teach the lecture notes: he reads the powerpoints to you which you can do on your own, my grade for this class came from prior knowledge of chemistry.

I took (and easily passed) both Honors and AP Chemistry in high school. Taking Dr. Watkins' class made me change my Biochemistry major. His tests are unreasonable for the short amount of time given. He isn't helpful... don't take him unless you must!

Watkins gives too much background information when trying to explain something to you. I had better luck teaching myself the material.

watkins is tough i had to drop the class. i'm not a bad student i put a lot of effort into this class. nothing of relevance from class is on the tests. if you have to take him. don't go to class stay home and work problems.

Unless you are already familiar with chemistry or plan to teach yourself, don't take watkins. He's boring and hard to understand.

You have to study days ahead of time. He provides no examples. If you have a strong chem background its an easy class you don't have to go to. On the test, sometimes the answers don't match the ones given.

Last semester I took Watkins, went to class and studied for hours in this class only to get an F. This semester I took Kolniak, and got an A... not a coincidence!

Ok teacher. Has notes to buy at the library, but are not required. Material on tests is somewhat dissimilar to material given to study. Ok to take if you have taken Chemistry before.

Didn't teach very well...bought the notes the first day of class and he taught straight from them--webassign due every week but sometimes for bonus and he's always available outside of class...very nice

Watkins was truly a piece of work; I had too practically teach myself through the class (well, I tried to anyway); I went to all classes and all he did was read the "provided" powerpoints off of the slides, get someone else.

Watkins was an awful 1202 teacher...he just repeated things off slides...he never worked any problems....the chem tutor is how i got my grade...the only positive thing about this course were the curves on each exam

Watkins is TOUGH. The way he taught was just too difficult and he moves fast. His tests are long and are hard to finish.

DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is too hard and does not care for his students. He has to curve for 90 percent of the class to pass. Homework is not explained and he doesn't work with you.

Watkins is a good teacher and really tries to help you out. He is generous with extra credit and gives nice curves on exams.

If you're in this class, you probably have to take it. Dr. Watkins is an OK teacher. Everything's on Powerpoint, so there's not much actual working of problems. His exams can be rough, too. But he does explain well and is very friendly to student

Nice man if you get to know him. Recheck your tests, i found countless errors and when you show him his mistakes he remembers you (how i got an A)

He gives so much extra credit work, even an extra test if you do really bad on one of the other tests. Tests are hard, but the curve is amazing. He posts all of his notes online, has review sessions,and gives plenty of resources to help you out.

Don't take Watkins, you will regret it. If you do, stay on top of your work and make sure you've cracked the book before you go talk to him about help.

Watkins was a horrible professor! Most of the material that I learned, I taught myself. His lectures were boring, and his use of powerpoint was ridiculous. He was also arrogant, and belittled students.

Watkins is definitely the hardest chem teacher he goes into more detail than the other teachers. I dropped his class after he belittled me when I went to him for help.

Watkins is very insensitive. He gave me a zero on a test that was the same day as my grandpaw's funeral. The makeup test was cumulative, just like an exam. This was my only B, do not take him. Much better teachers out there.

Watkins is a good teacher and will give tons of extra help. Hw boost your grade too.

I thought Watkins was ok, tests were easy, big curves, lots of time to complete hw. No extra points though, classes are pretty boring, does not explain well, but allows a 5x8 cheat card for exams which was a lifesaver. You never had to memorize

Watkins knows his chemistry, however, he is not a good teacher. Notes are fast computerized and does not work problems 95% of the time. Continually says, "If you make it through this class." If you don't already KNOW chemistry take another teacher.

Watkins was one of the worst teachers I've ever had in my life. I am currently taking organic chemistry right now and I have to teach myself the material I missed from him. Take Hopkins; he's a great teacher (took him for 1202)!!!

Dr. Watkins lectured about topics he already expected you to be informed about. He taught as though he assumed you already knew everything about chemistry. Forgets that he is a chemistry expert and students are not. Monotone but occasional laughs.

Expect a rather esoteric lecture and perhaps some vocab that sounds greek unless you read the book, but also look forward to in-depth explanations and step-by-step instructions.

Dr. Watkins is the EASIEST Chem 1201 teacher, and I should know because I have had 3 different ones, and he is the BEST!

BORING..... but at least the curves in this class are amazing.... they literally saved my grade. A little effort will get you a good grade

Watkins is a tough one. He gives good lectures and plenty of bonus work. DO NOT take this class in the summer. It moves entirely too quick. Watkins will help if you need it. He's very understanding.

DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! I dropped this class in the summer, and he is very arrogant!!! The first test is OK but he screws you over for the second test. He only gives you 45min to complete it. He is not fair either.

Watkins only gives you 40 minutes to take a 20 question test that requires about five steps. If you usually take your time on test do not take him.
