HOGAN J (CHEM)

Dr. Hogan is THE BEST when it comes to helping a student out. He teaches by doing, so get ready to start writing on the board. He's really mastered one-on-one tutoring by helping only when you need it. His exams are just like the old exams he gives you. Also, all the exam questions come VERBATIUM from the book, so do all the practice questions. I finished the "As a Second Language Organic I" book before the first day of class, which helped TREMENDOUSLY. It's written very clearly and gives practice problems you can check in the back of the book. Seriously, take Hogan (during the summer if you can), do all the questions he suggests, and do the "As a Second Language" book. I walked in afraid of orgo (don't believe the horror stories!), and walked out in love with orgo.

this is such a chemistry class for non-chemists. we learn about things like pollution and toxins. and hogan uses kid language. so easy. grading system is 8 ten point quizzes then a 30 point final. when you add up your quiz points, it's out of 70, rather than 80. so you're okay to miss a few points here and there. oh and he goes over the material right before the quiz, making them even easier but you should study the material a bit beforehand anyway. you don't need the book, i'm not even sure if there is a book. you don't need to go to class because notes are on his website but make sure you don't lose track of when the quizzes are. i missed one because of that, i still managed an A though.

The class is little bit boring. But the exams are really easy. You can easily make an A in this course. All the on-class exam questions are similar to the online quizes. Take him!

Never went to class. In class quizzes (tests) are identical to the online ones, very easy to study for. Almost impossible to not have an A going into the final.

If you put the time in to do all the homework and the pretest then there is no need to go to class. Grading was really easy.

if you do the webassign quizes online, the quizes in class are exactly the same. go to class for webassign answers. Dr. Hogan doesn't use moodle, so keep track of your scores!

Boring class, but real nice guy though. His quiz questions come from his old finals. I didn't discover until later on in the semester otherwise I would've had an A or a B.

It is better to take this class as your continuing GenEd class. Hogan is a good teacher. Knows chem. really well, so sometimes goes in too deep! read the bold lines frm notes for exams. read the quizzes for final!

You will only have weekly quizzes in his class, no test (except final). If you need help, he is always there with a smile. ALWAYS go to class and take notes on the questions he goes over. Better to buy packet of notes instead of book, he'll explain

Hogan is prettyy boring! BUT you don't really need to go to class.. the notes from class are on his website, and the quizzes come right from the practice tests! boring, but easy..

If you can do the webassign quizzes you'll do fine. The class was alot easier than I expected.

He was pretty bad, I have to say. The tests are just like WEBASSIGN, but his communication and teaching skills are horrible! He doesn't teach everything covered on the final, which isn't made up by him. The curve in the end is pretty good though.

Probably one of the worst chemistry teacher !! dont take him unless you want to study 8 hours a day !!! but if you do your homeworks, you will get an A...

If you must take this class, take it during the summer. There are open note quizes and he curves the final. I learned absolutely nothing in this class, but stil managed a B.

Amidst the corny jokes, Hogan is an excellent teacher. Plently of extra credit opportunities as well as a curve on each test. He doesn't care if he takes up the whole hour as long as he answers your question.

HOGAN IS TERRIBLE. You will NOT learn your stuff. If you plan to take 1202, DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY!

Easiest class in the world. Hogan puts all the exams he will give all year online since day one (exams=webassigns). Never went to class...5-6hr of studying b4 exam to learn webassign and U will get an A. EASY Professor.

Dr. Hogan is a very strange guy. Ignore all of his lecture except when he explains how to do the webassigns. Thats all the class consists of.

He doesn't explain what's on the test or final, gets students & himself confused when explaining stuff, doesn't go over reaction mechanisms, lots of work required

I'm good at chemistry but Hogan made it impossible for me!, you never really know what he is talking about and his test leave no room for mistake. I dropped the class.

hogan makes the course interesting. if you want to learn, he cares about helping you. if you do not care to learn, it is nothing taken from him. he has the attitude of "it is up to you whether you want to learn or not." he is a very knowledgeable man

I hate chemistry, but I managed to pass Hogan's class. His lectures are boring, but if you study, you'll do fine. He gives you all the info you need for the tests.

Hogan's class was so easy. All you have to do is the webassign homework problems and the quizzes are the exact same questions. The final is impossible, but you can fail it and still get an A!

Hogan DOES NOT prepare you for the final. Other teachers make it, none of what you learn is on the final. You will make A's on the in-class quizes and fail the final.

Over all, Chem 1201 is okay because it is a review from highschool, but Hogan seems to make the math and concept more difficult by using cheezy analogies. I'm not that great at chem, but Hogan's class didn't seem to help that.

Mr. Hogan was horrible. Going to class was a complete pain and waste of time - only take him if you can learn on your own oustide of class!

I ended up with something like a 79.3 in the class, and he wouldn't budge, so a C went on my transcript. Also I suggest bringing coffee. Lots of coffee.

Chem 1201 isnt that hard...hogan is....dont take him unless you LIKE teaching yourself everything

The material was not something a non-science major wants to 'learn'. Hogan didn't explain anything and wasn't willing to help struggling students. Bad experience. Dropped class and got a W

list class was terrible, Hogan is the worst teacher. He makes no sense. However it is easy to get an A. The homework is worth 50% of your grade

He trys to convince everyone they are going to fail. He is a unhelpful instructer who doesn't care about his students. The class itself isn't very hard, but avoid he if possible

I cheated in this class, so that's how I got a B. I even cheated on the final. So, the class was easy for me because of that. But if you do cheat, just don't get caught...GOOD LUCK!!!

Here's what you do: Write to him and tell him you were sick and couldn't make the quiz. Get a copy of the test and someone's answers. Put it on a notecard and bring the card with you when you go to his office to take the test...EASY "A"!!!

Avoid Hogan at all costs. The worst teacher in the department. Web assigns were very hard. He makes easy material hard and boring.

Hoga makes a class where homework is powerful, homework online was challenging but possible to make a 10 out of 10 in four or five trys, and homework was FIFTY not fifteen FIFTY percent of the final grade.

It isnt worth going to class. 70% of your grade is based on homeworks. Do all the homeworks and you will get an a. Teach yourself out of the book

Hogan makes corny jokes, but at least they make the class interesting. He has a way to explain tough chemistry that makes it funny and as interesting as chemistry can be. Not a horrible class, but be prepared for the webassign homeworks.

Chemistry 1201 sucks. 1202 is alright, but there's no point in taking that if you didn't take 1201. I took Hogan because his section was available and I thought he might be like the wrestler, Hulk Hogan. Boy, was I wrong -- this guy's boring.

Hogan is a terrible teacher. He does not teach, he does not curve, and his tests are brutal. I took the summer course, and read 650 pages of organic in less time than should be allowed. Do not take Hogan!

This class is VERY boring and very hard to understand. He grades very hard also. If you miss one question you're down to a "B"!...you'll definitely need the book for this class!

Hogan does not teach the material clearly and seems to make the math problems a whole lot harder than they should be, the good thing is that the quizzes are straight from homework problems.

he sucks as a teacher, cant teach cant explain. i used all of my old chemistry material from highschool and got by.100 possible points. every question you get wrong is a % off final grade :( scary and stressful

At first seems awful, but he has old quizzes online, and all the homework he does in class are the questions on teh test. The final was a group, it was so-so.

This guy is nuts. He is a chemist who expects everyone to know what he knows. Tells the class that half will fail or drop because they do not have enough prior knowledge of chemistry. STAY AWAY!

He gives you an example of each test question in the book, and he goes through the examples in class. not too hard

this is the easiest A i've ever gotten...you don't have to go to class...his sample quizzes are on the internet...take this class!!

Good teacher. To make the grade, pay attention in class and do the homework. Easy to understand and he explains well.

Hogan tries to get everyone to drop his class. All you have to do is get the old quizzes off of the internet and learn how to do them. Class attendance is not neccessary.

I missed a B by one point. Dont expect him to cut you any slack. His tests are only 14 questions long so you better know your stuff.
