HOPKINS J (CHEM)

Professor Hopkins (JHOP) is my favorite teacher by far. I am in the College of Engineering and took his class last semester. JHOP is amazing compared to the other chemistry classes I have sat in on. He provides notes at the beginning of the semester that essentially ensure that you understand all of the material he will present over the semester. If you bring those notes to class and follow along (as well as do the homework), you will come out of the class with a good grade AND a good understanding of the material. He uses Webassign for homework and allows multiple tries for each section of each question (as opposed to some teachers who make you submit the entire question as a whole). He has Bonus Exams that you can complete right before each test that can get you an extra percentage point towards your final grade. The Bonus Exams also really prepare you for the tests (which are scantron tests). His tests are fair and prepare you extremely well for the group final. Last semester, our class (his section) had a much higher average on the final exam (which is the same for all Chem 1201 classes) than every other class. He is always more than willing to work with you during office hours on any questions you may have about a test or homework or just general questions you have on your own. I have recommended him to several friends and they all like him just as much as I do. P.S. For those women who are commenting about his "sexist slurs", they are jokes and no one I have ever talked to feels as though he is degrading women. He has been nothing but respectful to myself and other females in the class.

Fair teacher with fair grading. Keeps class interesting with the occasional anecdotes about his family or life in general. You need a clicker for this class, and the tests are similar to the questions he asks in class. For homework, it's best to have people to work with because they are intensive. Uses the recommended text, Engel. Uses notes. Be ready to visit his office for help if you want that A.

Trick questions the entire semester. If there is any slight exception to any of the millions of rules, you will be tricked on the exams. This course requires a boat load of work and study time. If you dont need chem 1201 dont take it. If you must, dont take Hopkins.

Teacher is useless. You have to teach yourself everything and the tests are still impossible. Take another teacher if possible.

Exams were a little bit tricky. Study bonus exams. Final exam was ridiculously hard, but he curves it a little bit. Jhop is pretty cool.

Even if you have to get on the waitlist...GET THIS TEACHER!!!... One of the best teacher's at LSU...no lies

Take Hopkins if you can for 1201 or 1202! Funny guy, tells great stories, and makes chemistry easy. In class clicker quizzes, homework on webassign, and scantron tests. Teaches exactly what will be on the departmental final, which is great.

Hopkins is a great teacher, but the final was RIDIC!He does give practice exams very similar to he real thing, but on the final there were 4 out of 17 questions that I had never seen. Overall, good teacher.

Hopkins is the best chem teacher in the dept. On the final, his classes got an average 12% higher on the final. He's great, and he's available outside of the classroom. Take him if you can.

Pretty easy, do all the homework and study the bonus exams for the tests and you'll be fine. huge curve on the final(mine was 14 points) and replaces one test with your final grade

JHop is the nicest man! He is so helpful with assignments and will even help you with the bonus quiz.

This class is difficult, but JHOP is the MAN! He teaches slowly so it's easy to follow. His haikus, buddhist words of wisdom, and lessons in life are worth going to class.

Hopkins is great. Extremely corny, but teaches 1421 as if you've never had Chem before. LOTS of bonus and curves at the end. DO THE BONUS EXAMS!!! Clicker questions are big part of final grade too, so go to class.

I'm a 3.5 student and I FAILED this class. If CHEM isn't your thing don't waste your time.. He does give bonus exams just like the test the night before but good luck at figuring them out! He really tries to help but it's a big class.

Best chemistry teacher at LSU. Grade was not JUST tests. Must do homework and timed quizzes but they arent bad. Gives his own lecture notes and doesnt use book. VERY good teacher. Explains things very well.

JHOP IS THE BEST! He actually cares about his students. he makes class as interesting as he can and gives a lot of bonus. he even comes to the dorms and studies with the students until one in the morning .going to have to study though its chemistry.

J Hop cares about his students and wants them to do well. If you do the Bonus Exams the night before the tests you will get an A. His class also scored 10 % higher on the final compared to other classes.

This was a good class. You have to put in some effort, but if you actually try when you do all of your homeworks and quizzes, the tests won't be too bad. JHOP is great!!

Hopkins is awesome. He's funny and he relates to the students very well. His tests are exactly like the bonus quizzes he gives so if you can do those you'll get an A on the test.

He's good at teaching Chem! We use his note packet instead of book, so if you want a better understanding in preparations for the MCAT or DAT, you should use the book as reference or tak another teacher. He's monotonous, but his jokes makeup for it.

J Hop knows his chemistry there is no doubt about that. This teacher wants you to learn the material backward and forward and every which way. He gives bonus in forms of "Bonus Exams". Take this teacher if you are a Chem Major only!!!

I have to admit, I was skeptical that I could ever learn anything of value in a course on quantum mechanics. I was wrong. Jhop was such a good teacher and I really enjoyed the class.

This class focused on procedure more than a thorough understanding of concepts. It's doable if you can remember procedures and gain enough understanding to apply them in different situations.

J Hop is prob. the best professor at LSU. He not only explains and teaches well, he is also always there for additional help to any of his students. I hated Chemistry until I took his class. Definitely take him!

When I initially took Chemistry 1201 with Dr. Chan last spring, I had to drop. I made an A in Hopkins' class because he really does know how to get the information across in a efficient manner. The bonuses and curves he gives help alot, too!

Dr. Hopkins is a great teacher and does an incredible job teaching Chemistry.

This class requires alot of studying...teaching yourself because Hopkins' lectures or too lengthy and don't provide students with sufficient material for his challenging exams. Don't take him in the summer; he doesn't even provide a test syllabus!

He's monotone, but you can buy his notes for $25. Do ALL the practice tests b/c most test questions come directly off them; if you can do them, you will have an A or B on the tests. I sat through A friend took Allen and her tests were MUCH harder.

JHop is a great guy, very personable, wants to see his students not only pass his class but succeed in college. The material is tough and requires alot of time, jump in head first or you'll be behind all semester!

Hopkins gives a huge curve at the end, both on the final and in general- i went from a 73 C to a 95 A after the curve on the final i made an 85 on the final

If you have to take Chem for Science majors then take Hopkins. You have to do a lot of work in this class but he gives you tons of bonus and the test come straight from WebAssign and the notes. He is also very funny and makes lots of jokes in class

Hopkins is the best teacher you can take for this class. He is very helpful, gives you his own notes, and bonus exams that are exactly like the tests. It is hard to fail his class.

Hopkins makes you buy his notes for the class, but he lectures straight from them, you use webassign as your homework program, and he gives pretests that you can take for bonus, but still be prepared to study because the subject itself isn't easy!

Hopkins is cool. Do the webassigns, bonus quizzes, and take as many bonus exams as you can and you should do well in his class.

Dr. J Hop is the best teacher I have had at this school so far, and you should definitely schedule Hopkins for Chem 1201 and 1202. He really cares about his students. The exams come straight from his Bonus Exams that he gives you before each exam.

JHop is the coolest! His second test in 1201 and 1202 are hardest, but he had us so prepared for the final that his sections were not included on the departmental curve! He was definitely a great and easy teacher!

Hopkins is a really nice guy. the class is boring and his voice gets kinda hypnotizing, but he cracks jokes to wake you up. if you have to take chem 1201, i'd take hopkins. he really does care about his students and puts a lot of time in.

Web assigns are more difficult than in 1201. However, he is very helpful outside of class. He makes up the departmental final, so it is relatively easy. Study bonus exams 4 test!!!

If you have to take chem 1202 take hopkins...just do the bonus exam he gives out before each test, they are almost exactly the same questions on the test.

Hopkins sells you the packet of notes in the beginning of class. All you do is go to class and add to them. If you miss class, you aren't completely lost. He also offers SI sessions all the time which really help.

You are a retard if you do not take Hopkins. First, if you study the bonus exams, you will make 90-100 on every test. They are the exact same except he changes data. Second, DO ALLL the bonus. It will truly help. Final Grade was 89 B + 1.9 bonus = A

This class is a joke, the only downfall is that you do have to spend quite a bit of time on his webassigns(his homework). If you study his bouns exams you will make 100s on the tests.

Dont take 7:30 class. Hopkins is great, but if you are pledging, or have anything time consuming going on then dont take chem period. if u wanna learn, take hopkins. u will pass if u try. he doesnt give grades though. i messed up by not going to clas

He gives you good notes at the beginning of the semester, taking notes in class is really easy, the material is generally clear, and he doesn't mind answering questions.

Take Hopkins, only go to class on the first 2 days to buy his notes and on test days, do the bonus exams because the questions are the same as on the tests, and find a friend to do webassign with to increase your amount of tries
