MARTIN B (HIST)

Martin is by far the proudest professor I've ever had. He loves pimping out his movies and books or whatever. So yeah, he's pretty obnoxious and can be very rude too. Yet, sometimes he's oddly endearing. His lectures are engaging, he does care about making it interesting. I also liked that he didn't give any books to read, aside from the textbook (which was annoying because you had to read it just for one single question on the test that pertains to the book chapters). Tests weren't bad (3 essays) and studying was easy, it's really not a difficult course. I'd recommend his class as long as you can tolerate him better than I could.

DO NOT TAKE MARTIN! This class was awful! I would no recommend it to my worst enemy. You take hundreds of pages of notes and only have 2 tests which make up your entire grade! No extra credit whatsoever, so if you fail both test you are screwed! And from those 100s of pages of notes there are only like 5 questions, which are IDs that you have to explain every detail about. Oh and on top of all of that you have to read 3 books that you have to write 4 page essays on your test on.

To give you an idea of this man let me start by saying his personal mantra is "good enough is not good enough." Dr. Martin is one of the most learned people I have ever encountered in my life but DO NOT expect him to be a nice and cordial man. He knows more about European and world history than anyone I've ever encountered at LSU (and I'm a history major) but his class is one that will keep you up the whole week before the mid term and final studying and worrying. He is NOT an easy man to deal with. When you try to have a conversation with him he's the kind of person you listen (and don't talk) to. Okay so about exams: He lectures the whole class period incredibly fast and by the end of the semester I had over 50 pages of typed single space size 10 font notes. There were only 2 tests- a mid term and a final- and each test had 2 essay questions. Before the test he pretty much gave no information or study guide other than that the test would be 2 essay questions. I have taken Dr. Martin 2 times and made an A both times. Every Dr. Martin mid term or final I have taken required me to fill up an entire blue book with 2 essays- that's just what he expects. The bottom line: If you love history and knowing about the world and are willing to read and study your tail off, then this is the class for you. If you want an easy A and a nice, popular professor, look elsewhere.

Hard hard hard... but WONDERFUL teacher. Very engaging, kinda scary, kinda sexy. Martin is the best teacher I have ever had.

He expects a lot. I recommend the class only if you need it or love french history. 40-50 pages of notes per test, only 2 grades total: midterm and final. Lots of outside reading. Interesting subject.

If you want to learn something then take Martin. If you want to have an easy A then don't. Typed 5 to 6 pages of notes today and the two test were over 45 pages of notes. His grader is extremely fair and doesn't take that much off.

Professor Martin was a good teacher. He really knows his stuff. The only thing is that if you miss a class, you won't do well. Eat sleep and breath this class.

Martin is the MAN. He definately knows his stuff. Exams are tough: 2 book essays and a lot of IDs. You do learn a lot, and the class is very interesting!

Dr. Martin is a wonderful professor. He is a French expert, but teaches all aspects of the class well. He went to the Naval Academy and worked for the NSA. He can answer anything. Great class. Only a midterm (40%) and final (60%).

Get ready to eat sleep and breathe this class!!! If you miss one lecture, you're screwed. Bring a tape recorder. I typed 7-8 pages of notes a day in there. Don't take this class if you HATE history! Its hard to pay attention if you hate it!

Spoke too fast sometimes and kind of condescending at times, but the material is extremely valuable, esp. in today's world

This class is really amazing. The problem is that he basis your grade on just 2 tests and they are intense!! Also if you skip you are screwed. There is no next just a few long novels and he does not post notes.

Martin is brilliant! try not to focus too much on the details though. You can tell in the lecture what he wants you to know

Martin was a pretty good teacher. His grader is VERY fair. He'll even give you credit if you just write the correct century for a date on the test.

I had to withdraw from this class because of a family emergency, but the lectures i did attend were breathtaking. Excellent teacher. the TA was an A-hole though.

Truly great teacher, like listening to a storyteller. He's funny and gets you interested. Study a lot, especially on sections you can predict will be on the test. He's a jerk to people walking in late though.

There is a lot of information to memorize in this class; Martin is decent but often hard to follow.

Martin is a really good speaker. He moves pretty quickly, but he's willing to help if you need it. There is a lot of reading, but I only read 1 of the 4 books & read parts of the other 3 at the last minute, & I got a B.Go to class and pay attention.

Martin's tests consist of 1 five page essay question and 8 short answers...thats it. He is a great lecturer but he expects u to be as passionate about history as he is. dont expect an easy A or B

Professor Martin is a very entertaining lecturer. It is worth your time to go to class. You don't have to read the book, just look at the tables and documents. This man is a wonderful teacher!

He's an awesome lecturer, but like everyone else says, expect stressful tests. No books to read other than the textbook, which was very dry. The lectures were awesome and it was worth the hard work.

I loved Martin's class and I would strongly recommend it to anyone. He is challenging and expects the best work out of you so this class is not an easy A but it is very enjoyable.

Dr. Martin is scary at first, but his lectures are very interesting. He only gives two tests, so get ready to study a lot of material! He also assigns 4 LONG books.

Awesome teacher! You will do well, and know your stuff if you take the time to go to class and study a little. Tests are essay form, but in Histroy all classes are like this. He KNOWS his stuff, and is very interested in teaching it. A gentleman.

Get ready to eat, sleep, and breath this class. If your are not a good note taker or a swift writer, make sure u have a take recorder (trust me it's a necessity). You'll have at least 50+ pages of notes to read (that's if you type em).

Good teacher, good class...only problem is that the entire semester's grade is based on two exams, slip once and it's over.

It is one of the most interesting classes ever. Be prepared to work, but if you enjoy France and the French language then this is the perfect class.

I'm not even into history that much, and this was by far the most interesting class I've taken through my 5 years. Dr. Martin rules.

The class was interesting, however the exams were unreasonable. Expect to do a lot of outside work.

He expected too much on the exams and did not consider the time for the amount of work required. Be prepared for unreasonable tests.

His lectures are okay, but he requires too much reading, and his tests are too involved for a 2000 level course.

Excellent speaker. Easy to understand. The sheer volume of material is daunting, but I highly recommend the course to all.

Incredibly talented lecturer, but he covers way too much ground in one semester and too many books to read. You'll find it interesting but prepare to spend a lot of time on this class.
