GRIMES W (MUS)

Grimes just wants his students to go to class. He posts his ppts on Moodle, but he still wants us to be there to listen to his lecture. He plays a lot of music for us to listen to and talks a lot. A lot. Used this time to shop online and Facebook. Quizzes and tests are easy to find online and easy if you're good at memorizing slides and music.

EASY FINE ARTS A!! This dude is a music hippy who I despise listening to....so I didn't. He used to use clickers but dropped them, reducing the avg class size to about 20 music nerds. 4 "quizzes" (which are the equivalent of tests), a midterm, and a final. All are super easy (the exact midterm and final are on noteswap). All 6 of the exams are on the computer and come from a bank of 60 questions (each asks a random combo of 40) for the midterm and final and a bank of 30 questions for the "quizzes" of 20 questions. You can retake all of these once, requiring you to be a complete moron to not get an A. I hated jazz before and still hate it now, but thanks for the A in the worst branch at LSU... fine arts

The instructor is nice.. but that doesnt cut it. If you play an instument this is an easy A... I studies very hard for this class but the tests have listening and I cannot read music or identify artist's styles ect. I am embarrassed to say I earned a C in this class. I recommend Music Appreciation.

dont take the class if you dont like to identify music and stuff~~ lots to study for each quiz, but he does let you take the quiz two times. he will drop your lowest quiz grade at the end.. didnt take attentence this semester

Grimes is arrogant, but the class was interesting. All tests and quizzes in computer lab. I think it was an easy A, but had friends that made C's. Posts videos of classes on moodle.

Dr. Grimes was hilarious! Spoke and looked like Steve Martin. This class was really interesting and I learned so much from it. Go to class each day cause he takes clicker tests for attendance. He grades easy and often brings in jazz players in class.

If you have never taken a music class before, do not start here. The quizzes are easy but identifying the music takes a trained ear and can be tricky. Grimes is a really good teacher that plays the music too long and can make you sleepy at times.

This was one of the easiest classes I have ever taken at LSU. I have had some music classes prior to this but it is not necessary, if you do not make an "A" you did not do anything because I barely did anything. Attendance optional but fun class.

The lectures were engaging, fun & entertaining. The testing was ridiculously harder than expected and meticulous ear for music is needed.

MR. GRIMES is in his early 50s and is the traditional, grouchy Band Director / Musician!! This class is very laid-back!! Attendence is VITAL for the Listening Stuff!! NO BOOK! Test are fair!! EASY ELECTIVE for Anyone!! I LOVE KENNY G, HAHA!!!

If you already know about jazz, take it. I know a little bit and have done pretty kickass on all my tests and quizzes, but I don't go to class and will therefore get a B. Major attendance points!

If you have to take a music course, take this one!! Grimes makes it interesting, and he is willing to help you. Very laid back. Easy course!

I'm not musical so when he talked about this stuff in class I didn't understand but the quizzes and tests are easy.

This was a really interesting class but Grimes was not a good professor. He knows everything about jazz and seems to forget that he's teaching an elective. He puts things on tests that he didn't mention in class, and testing was computer-based.

Really fun and interesting class. While it is pretty easy it is not an automatic A. You're going to have to study for the tests but if you do that and go to class you'll be fine.

Grimes is arrogant, doesn't answer e-mails, and completely unfair with exam questions and grading. He barely curves, if he curves at all, so don't let him fool you into thinking he'll be fair. Grimes thinks his class is so important.

Simply put, this is the best class I have taken in college. You don't have to be musically talented, but you have to want to learn. Test are on computer and easy if you go to class. If you go to class he give answers to test questions often.

THIS CLASS IS NOT AN EASY A. Grimes is a jerk and you have to study way too much for an elective. I didn't go to class because I couldn't stand the sound of his voice, and that hurt me on exams and quizzes, so go every once and a while.

If you dont have a background in music this class is VERY difficult. Questions from quizzes and exams are sometimes out of nowhere. This was my hardest class!!

Good class but NOT a blow-off. you WILL have to study a good bit for the quizes and tests. Grimes knows what he's talking about but often comes off as a bit arrogant.

A good class, though Grimes is opinionated and isn't afraid to show it. "Classical musicians" who offend easily: stay away.

Grimes does really well in teaching this course. He really knows what he is talking about, but sometimes that can be his downfall because every now and then what he talks about gets hard to understand.

Grimes is good, but you have to study some for the tests and the listening parts and somewhat difficult and he gives extra credit

This is not an easy A class, but it you just study and learn exactly what he tells you then you will do fine. There is a lot of material but it is not hard. Dr, Grimes seems kind of mean but he is very nice and really enjoys teaching this material!

This class is really harder than I thought it would be. It takes a lot of work to get an A if you don't know anything about music, like me. Grimes is nice though, and gives you the notes.

Grimes is really nice and helpful. This class requires that you attend 8 of 10 concerts to get an A. Seems easy, but the concerts are at bad times and therefore it is more difficult than it appears. Check your calendar before taking this class.

He is very passionate about jazz, but the class is boring. if you aren't a music major, this class is worthless. be prepared to study a lot, but he lets you take retakes so that helps a lot.

Grimes is an interesting fellow. His opinion on pop music (especially Kenny G) is worth hearing.

History O' Jazz is one of the best classes offered at LSU, Grimes has a great personality and he really loves to teach this class, hell he's been teaching it for 21 years. TAKE IT!

Grimes is one of the best intructors at LSU (he should be; hes been here forever). The material is easy, no homework, don't have to go to class, and most importantly, you can impress the ladies w/your knowledge of music that doesnt end in -etallica.

It was an interesting topic but a boring class. Grimes has a dry sense of humor and lives, eats, sleeps, and breaths jazz. He doesn't really care about his students or how they are doing in the class. After finals, he blatantly ignored my e-mails

If you're not a music wiz, this class isn't for you. The whole class consists of listening to jazz and memorizing who wrote it, what era it's from, and what type of jazz it is. VERY BORING AND HARD! I definately discourage taking it.

Grimes is funny as all get out. The class is fun, he brings in performers often.

Very interesting class. Grimes is very opionated and somewhat of a jazz elitist snob, however. I found that entertaining.

Grimes is somewhat cocky, but its only becuase he's a seasoned/talented jazz muscian. Notes are online, i stopped going after the midterm and ended up with an A.

The material is interesting, and Grimes is arrogant in a entertaining way. Be warned; it is not an easy A!

this class was actually quite fun for me. i knew absolutely nothing about music and still received an A. if you go to class and pay attention you will do fine.

I actually liked Jazz music until I took this class. Grimes is the worst teacher I've ever had -- his total music snobbery ruined my experience.

Bill Grimes rules...straight up. He teaches Jazz History like it ain't no thang, ya heard. No seriously, he's awesome. It's probably not for people that only listen to "Top 40" or " Hits of the 90s" radio, though (you know who you are..)

His test are kinda tricky because they are not always on what is covered in his class, but overall Grimes is a decent teacher.

Do not take this class if you don't know anything about music. Grimes is a good teacher, the material is just hard if you dont know the music lingo.

I thought I was in Hell. Not interesting, although it could have been, too technical in details of music, not social or personal history of Jazz. Non-music majors--stay away!

This was such a fun, interesting, and easy class. Grimes is a great guy. He makes jazz very interesting. I love the music we listened too also. You dont even have to know anything about music.

Great class for anyone interested in music...if you aren't interested in learning more about music, do not take this class.

Dr. Grimes Is a great teacher. He is funny, friendly and interesting. It helps if you have a little background in music for this class. Class attendance is very important.

Awesome class...helps if you know a little about music....but its ok if you don't too...lots of studying required, but its fun! i didn't mind studying...if you need to take a music appreciation take this! if you don't need to, then take it anyway!!

Grimes is a cool guy. Fun class if you like Jazz or music in general.
